This is a HOW-TO from the zx14ninja.com forum. It was posted by dattaway on 1/27/2008.
I haven't seen any posts on the internet yet giving exact details how this was done. The purpose of this mod is to get the full 6th gear timing and fuel curves in all gears. I found a single 220 ohm resistor to work perfectly. The neutral light works properly and all gear positions show up as "6" If Radio Shack sells electronic parts anymore, they might still have a package of them for $0.27. That's the $0.27.
The fifteen minutes is looking for the gearshift position switch connector and splicing the resistor in there. Looking above the shifter and just to the right of the white overflow reservoir, there's the green connector. Its tucked in there, but a finger should easily pull it out for full access. Squeeze the tab to pull it out. Cut a few inches of the harness covering to expose the four wires. One 220 ohm resistor is needed. The color code is red-red-brown followed by a silver or gold band. Splice one side end of the resistor into the black wire. Cut the green/red striped wire. The other end of the resistor splices into connector side of this green/red wire. Tape or heat shrink off the unused remaining wire from the switch.
Test the gears by rotating the rear tire on a stand and working the shifter. The neutral light should work and every gear should be in 6. I have the flies out and the acceleration seems much more natural with no more dips in the throttle. The difference could be felt right away. The ZX14 has a very good feel for it. I have about 100 miles on this mod and throttle control just feels better. Oh, it can wheelie very well too.
